Taking its name from the Japanese 破壊する (hakai suru) — “to destroy” — this is one of those katanas where restraint somehow makes it look considerably more threatening.

The design is beautifully stripped back: a deep black saya, dark fittings and a warm burnt-orange tsuka and sageo. There are no screaming colours or unnecessary ornamentation competing for attention. Instead, Hakai Suru has the purposeful appearance of a sword that was made first and foremost to look like a sword.

And beneath that understated exterior sits the bit that really matters.

The blade is genuinely hand forged and traditionally clay tempered, using differential hardening to produce a natural hamon within the steel itself. No printed temper line. No cosmetic shortcut. The subtle variations created during the process mean the blade has the character you'd expect from a properly forged katana.

‘Hakai Suru’ Minamoto Hand Forged Katana in 1060 High Carbon Steel.

This handmade katana is made of 1060 high carbon folded steel. Each blade is lovingly forged in fire and beaten until the impurities are removed from the steel, leaving only the finest blade. It is heat tempered in the traditional manner and quenched in oil and water. The wooden handle is wrapped in genuine Stingray skin (Samekawa) before the traditional cotton handle wrapping (Tsukamaki).
