Tanto Overview

The tanto is a dagger that can have either a single or double edge, with a length ranging from 15 to 30 cm (5.9 to 11.8 inches). It was primarily designed for stabbing, but its edge can also be used for slashing. Most tanto are crafted in the hira-zukuri style, which means they have nearly flat sides without a ridgeline, unlike the shinogi-zukuri style used for katanas. Some tanto have particularly thick cross-sections, making them suitable for piercing armor, and these are known as yoroi toshi.

Tantō were mainly carried by samurai, while common people generally did not wear them. Women sometimes carried a small tanto called a kaiken in their obi for self-defense. On the battlefield, samurai sometimes wore a tanto as the shoto (small sword) in place of a wakizashi in a daisho set. Before the wakizashi/tanto combination became common, it was typical for a samurai to carry a tachi along with a tanto instead of a katana and a wakizashi.
