🏯 'Shogun's Gift' – Minamoto Hand-Forged 1095 Makuri Laminated & Clay Tempered Katana

Some swords are made to be admired. Others are made to be treasured for generations.

Every now and again, a katana comes along that reminds us why we fell in love with Japanese swords in the first place.

The Shogun's Gift is one of those swords.

Named in honour of the legendary Minamoto clan, whose rise to power helped establish Japan's first shogunate, this exceptional katana combines traditional Japanese sword-making techniques with beautiful materials and extraordinary attention to detail.

And when we say traditional, we really mean it.

This isn't simply another hand-forged katana with a fancy name and an attractive saya.

At its heart is a 1095 high-carbon steel blade, traditionally clay tempered and constructed using the complex Makuri lamination technique, a combination that puts this sword in an entirely different league from conventional decorative replicas.

⚔️ The Art of Makuri Lamination

Here's where things get particularly interesting.

Most modern katanas are forged from a single piece of steel.

The Shogun's Gift goes considerably further.

Its blade uses Makuri lamination, a traditional Japanese construction method in which a softer, more resilient steel core is surrounded by harder outer steel.

The idea is beautifully simple, even if achieving it is anything but.

The harder outer steel provides excellent edge retention, while the softer internal core helps the blade absorb stresses without becoming excessively brittle.

It's an ingenious combination of two different properties of steel, brought together in a single blade.

And it's exactly the sort of craftsmanship that separates a serious collector's katana from something designed merely to hang on a wall.

🔥 Genuine Clay Tempering. Genuine Hamon.

As if the laminated construction wasn't impressive enough, the blade is also traditionally clay tempered.

During heat treatment, clay is applied in varying thicknesses along the blade, controlling the cooling rate during quenching.

This creates differential hardening, allowing the cutting edge to achieve greater hardness while the spine retains more flexibility and resilience.

It also produces one of the most beautiful features of a traditionally made Japanese sword.

A genuine natural hamon.

Not acid-etched.

Not printed.

Not a decorative pattern pretending to be something it isn't.

The hamon is a real result of the blade's heat treatment, creating subtle variations along the steel that give the sword its own individual character.

And with no bo-hi (blade groove), the uninterrupted steel gives the sword a particularly substantial, purposeful appearance.

✨ Traditional Materials Worthy of the Name

The craftsmanship doesn't stop at the blade.

The wooden tsuka is covered in genuine stingray skin (samegawa) beneath traditional cotton wrapping, providing the authentic layered construction associated with quality Japanese swords.

The fittings are beautifully crafted from handmade brass with silver and gold plating, giving the sword a wonderfully refined appearance without becoming unnecessarily flashy.

The hardwood saya features genuine buffalo horn fittings, while a rich purple silk sageo provides a suitably regal finishing touch.

It's an elegant combination of traditional materials, intricate metalwork and premium craftsmanship.

And because a sword like this deserves a proper presentation, it arrives with a wooden presentation box, silk sword sleeve, cleaning kit and display stand.

Everything you need to give it the place it deserves in your collection.
