Well, this one isn't exactly shy.

Kodairyu takes the elegance of a traditionally styled katana and wraps it in some absolutely spectacular dragon work. From the sculpted creature coiling around the tsuka to the deep blood-red lacquer of the saya, virtually every part of this sword rewards a closer look.

The name Kodairyu evokes the idea of an ancient dragon — and looking at it, there really wasn't anything else we could call it.

The centrepiece is that extraordinary black textured tsuka, completely abandoning the conventional wrap in favour of a richly sculpted surface dominated by a three-dimensional dragon. Its body coils around the grip, claws seemingly gripping the sword itself, while the antiqued gold and silver-toned finish picks out every scale, horn and detail. Even the kashira gets its own fiery red accent, like a single glowing dragon's eye.

Then there's the saya.

Finished in a gorgeous deep crimson lacquer, it's deliberately much cleaner than the handle, decorated with tiny gold blossom details and tied with a broad black sageo. That restraint is exactly what the sword needs — giving the extravagant dragon work somewhere to breathe rather than turning the whole thing into a Christmas tree.

And behind all that ornamentation sits the important bit: a genuine hand-forged, clay-tempered steel blade.

Traditional clay tempering creates differential hardening through the blade and produces a natural hamon within the steel itself. It's proper sword-making craftsmanship underneath a design that is anything but ordinary.
